Farmstands

Suffolk County in general and Southold Township in particular have exerted tremendous efforts over the years to preserve the rural nature of the community.

Economically, however, the growing of fruits and vegetable is a difficult proposition.  The commodity distributors do not seek high quality, they seek adequate quality.  And the distributors do not pay premium prices, they pay commodity prices.

Summer visitors, however, seek high quality.

Our summer visitors crave high quality local fruits and vegetables, and the farmers want to be able to sell their produce at prices above those offered by the commodity distributors.  

This creates an opportunity that benefits both the local farmers and the summer visitors.

The solution is the farm stand, a particular North Fork institution that allows the farmers to sell high quality produce directly to the consumer, avoiding the middleman's cut and justifying the production of higher quality produce.
