The North Fork is home to a remarkable winemaking community. Starting in the 1980s visionaries began to develop vineyards (grape growing farms), wineries (places where people turn grapes into wine), and tap rooms (places to taste and purchase wine).
In 1985 a designated AVA (American Viticultural Area) was established in the North Fork. Encompassing Southold, parts of Riverhead, and Shelter Island, the North Fork AVA hosts about 40 vineyards, wineries, and tap rooms.
